Indian man kills 14 members of his family with knife

A 35-year-old Indian man allegedly murdered 14 members of his family including seven children with a butcher’s knife before committing suicide outside India’s financial capital of Mumbai, police said Sunday.

The attack happened after family members gathered late on Saturday at one of their homes in Thane, some 32 kilometres (20 miles) from Mumbai, for a family function, police said.

“The attacker, Hasnin Anwar Warekar, hung himself after slitting the throats of all other family members including his parents,” a Thane police spokesman, Gajanan Laxman Kabdule, told AFP.

The sole survivor of the attack, Warekar’s sister, was taken to hospital after neighbours heard her screaming for help after midnight and alerted police.

“We still haven’t been able to speak with the attacker’s 21-year-old sister, the lone survivor of the attack, who is in deep trauma at a city hospital,” Kabdule said.

Warekar attacked his family after apparently lacing their food with a sedative, according to several local media reports.

But the Indian Express newspaper said the chartered accountant stabbed his victims after they went to bed, having all decided to spend the night at the house.

“Prima facie evidence suggests that the accused bolted all the doors of the house and murdered his family while they were asleep with a knife that we found near his body,” Ashutosh Dumbre, joint commissioner of Thane police, was quoted saying.

Kabdule said he could not confirm whether the victims had been sedated, saying investigators were awaiting medical test results.

Television footage showed men lifting bodies wrapped in sheets in to the back of an ambulance, as crowds gathered outside the white-walled home.

Kabdule said details of the attack “are still sketchy” along with the motive.

According to the Press Trust of India news agency, a property dispute was behind the killings, but Dumbre said initial investigations have so far found no trigger for such an “extreme step”.

“In our inquiry so far, no one has yet been able to give the reason for this,” Dumbre told the ABP news channel.

“He worked with a private company in Mumbai. There were no known financial troubles or disputes and now we are hoping that the lone survivor can tell us something about the trigger,” he said.

Woman hides $10,000 worth of cocaine in vagina, gets caught at Airport

Drug smuggling and muling is a billion dollar industry across the globe, and for good reason. Cartels and the runners of high-level drug operations pay top dollar for people that can get narcotics and other contraband in and out of a destination without being detected by law enforcement, the single most important aspect of the business. Naturally, as technology allows law enforcement, airport security and coast guards to broaden the scope of their detection methods, the smugglers and mules’ methods have to evolve with the progressive times.

We are still Glo ambassadors - P-square

Rumours of P-square being dropped as Glo ambassadors may not be founded after all, as the twin group has said it has yet to receive any notification to that effect.

Unconfirmed reports during the week had speculated that the group might have taken this significant hit following an insult directed at the telecommunication company recently.

Endorsement deals from companies like Glo have been the mainstay of entertainers’ relevance in the country, which means that being dropped as an ambassador of the company would be a big deal for the group.

P-square’s publicist, Mr. Bayo Adetu, toldSaturday Beats that as far as the group is concerned, their termination as Glo ambassadors is only ‘real in the imagination of bloggers.’

“I don’t know where those rumours are coming from. Reports I have read have sighted anonymous officials. Glo has not communicated with P-square on anything like that. We have a contract with Glo and I can confirm that P-Square are still Glo ambassadors,” he said.

Attempts to clarify the status of the pop duo’s stand with Glo proved abortive as spokespersons contacted failed to respond to calls.

However, any possibility of being dropped from such a multimillion naira endorsement deal would have been an added blow to the group, considering the recent family issues that have been threatening their togetherness.

As calm settles on the recent social media mess created through war of words between Peter, who is half of the singing group, and their brother and former manager, Jude Okoye, entertainment watchers say the coming months would determine whether P-square would continue to exist or not.

I bought police walkie-talkie for N2,000 – Fake policeman

For two years, 45-year-old Dele Oduwole had operated as a fake traffic policeman around Ketu area of Lagos.

His specialty: arresting traffic offenders and extorting money from them.

Oduwole, who ran out of luck recently, said he and an accomplice had arrested a motorist at Ketu and impounded his vehicle before a suspicious policeman challenged them about their identities.

The suspect said he preferred to operate with just a walkie-talkie rather than putting on a fake police uniform.

According to him, he lost his job at the Agboyi Local Government secretariat, Lagos where he worked as an enforcement officer in the traffic unit about two years ago.

The suspect said he didn’t go to the extent of acquiring a police uniform in order not to draw too much attention.

Oduwole said, “After losing my job at the Agboyi Local Government secretariat, I realised that I had become good at arresting traffic offenders. So, I simply continued my work by telling people that I was a policeman in mufti.

“I realised that people respect policemen when they are holding a walkie-talkie. A friend told me where I could get the radio cheaply and I went there. I bought the walkie-talkie for N2,000 at Oshodi.

“The walkie-talkie does not even work. I swear it has never worked since I bought it. But for the period I used it, people obeyed me anytime I stopped a vehicle for any traffic offence. “I was actually helping the government. For example, the man we arrested before we were arrested was actually making a call while driving. That is a crime.”

Oduwole claimed that he had not used his fake police identity to commit any other crimes. But the police have said investigations are ongoing to determine if he had been involved in more grievous crimes while parading himself as a policeman.

Meanwhile, the police have also arrested a 52-year-old ‘SPY policeman’, on allegations of forging the signature of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to arrange the promotion of his colleagues.

The SPY policemen (short for supernumerary policemen) are members of a division of the Nigeria Police, established to guard properties and also take on artisan and other administrative works at police formations.

The suspect, Felix Igba, who explained he was attached to a police division in Eti-Osa, Ajah area of Lagos, was arrested after an investigation into some fraudulent promotion documents discovered at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters.

The suspect said, “The person who did it is Supol Africa. I know nothing about this forgery. I am not in possession of the document they used to do the promotion.

“All I did was introduce some people to Supol Africa, who did the document for the people who wanted promotion. But I thought he was genuine. I did not know it was forgery he was doing.”

The police have said he would be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.

Fifa presidential election: Gianni Infantino succeeds Sepp Blatter

Gianni Infantino has succeeded fellow Swiss Sepp Blatter as president of world football's governing body Fifa.

The Uefa secretary general polled 115 votes, 27 more than closest rival Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein (four votes) and Jerome Champagne (0) were third and fourth respectively.

Blatter, who had led Fifa since 1998, stood down last year and was later suspended from football for six years for breaching ethics guidelines.

Infantino is a 45-year-old lawyer from Brig in the Valais region of Switzerland, less than six miles from Blatter's home town of Visp.

He entered the presidential race when it became clear that Michel Platini, boss of European football's governing body Uefa, could not stand.

"I will work tirelessly to bring football back to Fifa and Fifa back to football," he said. "This is what we want to do."

He added: "I feel a lot of emotion and have not realised yet what has happened today. It is still very fresh and it's been a long and exciting journey and I probably need some time to chill out and see what has happened."

The election was due to be fought between five candidates, but South African Tokyo Sexwale withdrew before voting began in Zurich.

The first round of voting failed to determine an outright winner, though Infantino led with 88, three more than pre-vote favourite Sheikh Salman.

A simple majority of more than 50% - 104 of 207 available votes - was sufficient for victory in round two.

Not since 1974, when Joao Havelange of Brazil beat 13-year incumbent Stanley Rous of England, has a second round been needed.

An emotional Infantino told delegates that together they would "restore the image of Fifa and the respect of Fifa".

He added: "I want to work with all of you together in order to restore and rebuild a new era of Fifa where we can again put football at the centre of the stage.

"Fifa has gone through sad times, moments of crisis, but those times are over. We need to implement the reform and implement good governance and transparency. We also need to have respect.

"We're going to win back this respect through hard work, commitment and we're going to make sure we can finally focus on this wonderful game."

Photos: New Mom Tyra Banks Spotted For The First Time Since Welcoming Son

Tyra Banks was spotted yesterday for the first time since welcoming son, York via surrogate last month. The 42-year-old was seen picking up some drinks in Beverly Hills, and showing little signs of the sleepless nights that come with being a new mother.

She was spotted rocking a bright purple jumpsuit, which left her ample cleavage on display. The supermodel teamed the striking one-piece with a pair multi-strap black sandals with small heels, and wore her auburn locks in voluminous waves.

The America's Next Top Model host announced on January 27 that she and boyfriend Erik Asla had welcomed their first child together via surrogate. Along with a photo of the newborn's pink and blue striped hospital hat, she wrote:

'The best present we worked and prayed so hard for is finally here. He's got my fingers and big eyes and his daddy Erik's mouth and chin.

'As we thank the angel of a woman that carried our miracle baby boy for us, we pray for everyone who struggles to reach this joyous milestone. York Banks Asla, welcome to the world.'

Tyra, who has been dating Norwegian photographer Erik for two years, has previously spoken about her struggles to conceive.

She told People in a statement after announcing the happy news: 'We are so excited for our new baby boy bundle of joy. The journey to now has not been an easy process, as I’ve shared before. But there was a beautiful bright light at the end of the tunnel for me and his father, Erik.

Obama pays musical tribute to Ray Charles

US President Barack Obama paid tribute on Wednesday to Ray Charles and the late singer-songwriter’s unmistakable “singular sound” that the President said continues to influence generations of musicians.
Obama noted that Charles grew up in the segregated South, his early years coloured by poverty and tragedy. But, the President said, Charles had two things working in his favour: a strong mother and music.
He quoted Charles as once saying that he was born with music inside of him, and noted that Charles’ career encompassed every genre, including jazz, R ‘n’ B, rock ‘n’ roll, country and soul.
“Whatever genre of music he was playing, there was no mistaking his singular sound: that virtuoso piano playing that matched that one-of-a-kind voice,” Obama said at the White House, where he and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a taping of Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles: In Performance at the White House.
Charles, who lost his sight as a child, died in June 2004.
“Even as a young man, he had the rich, raw honey tone of an old soul,” Obama said.
Calling Charles one of his musical favourites, Obama said that whether a person was overcome by feelings of love, longing or loss, “Ray Charles had the rare ability to collapse our weightiest emotions into a single note.”
Usher, Demi Lovato, gospel singer Yolanda Adams and The Band Perry were among a group of contemporary artists who performed Charles’ music for an audience that included some of the musician’s children, Attorney-General Loretta Lynch, Sen. Barbara Boxer and the Rev. Al Sharpton.
Usher performed Georgia On My Mind, one of Charles’ most-recognised hits, along with What I’d Say, which brought the audience to its feet.
The hourlong programme is scheduled to be broadcast by PBS stations in the US on Friday.
The audience booed playfully when Obama mentioned during his welcoming remarks that Wednesday’s programme is the final “In Performance” event of his administration. Obama will leave office in January after two terms.
“Over the past seven years, Michelle and I have set aside nights like this to celebrate the music that shaped America,” he said, adding that it had become one of their most-cherished traditions. “I will not sing. But for our last one, it is fitting that we pay tribute to one of our favourites.”
Michelle Obama said the event would be “a little bittersweet for all of us” because it’s the final one.
The Obamas have hosted more than a dozen “In Performance” events, including the tribute to Charles.

US performs first uterus transplant surgery

The United States has completed its first uterus transplant surgery, following on a technique already proven in Sweden that could help women suffering from infertility, the Cleveland Clinic said Thursday.
The nine-hour surgery took place on February 24, and the 26-year-old patient — whose identity was not revealed — was in stable condition, the hospital said in a statement.
The transplanted uterus came from a deceased donor. More details about the surgery are expected during a press conference with the medical team to be scheduled next week in Cleveland, Ohio.
Late last year, Cleveland Clinic began enlisting candidates for uterine transplants as part of a clinical trial that aimed to offer the procedure to 10 women.
Women potentially eligible to receive a uterine transplant include those who suffer from an irreversible condition known as Uterine Factor Infertility (UFI), which affects between three and five percent of women worldwide, the hospital said.
Sweden’s University of Gothenburg achieved its first birth via a transplanted uterus in September 2014.

Sunday Oliseh resigns as Super Eagles coach
Sunday Oliseh has announced his resignation as Super Eagles Coach.
The former Nigerian International announced his decision to end his increasingly controversial tenure on Twitter early this morning.
He attributed the decision to lack of support and contract violations by the Nigerian Football Federation.
The 41-year-old, who was appointed as the Super Eagles Head Coach in July 2015, has had a tough time leading the National team with a poor run of results recently. He had recently had to apologise to the NFF and Nigerians after posting a video in which he attacked his critics. Earlier in his tenure he had fallen out with former Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, leading to the latter’s decision to quit the team. Oliseh noted that he was, however, grateful for the opportunity to lead the Super Eagles.
Details of his resignation remain unclear as the NFF has yet to comment on the matter.

Revealed: The world’s most powerful passports (Tourism)

The world’s most powerful passports
German nationals have the best passport in the world, according to the latest ranking released on Wednesday.
Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index for 2016, which ranks 218 countries according to the number of states they have visa-free access to, showed that Germany’s passport offers the most travel freedom, providing its residents hassle-free entry to 177 countries.
The UAE maintains the crown as having the best passport in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region. The UAE travel document, ranked 38th globally, allows its citizens to visit 122 states without applying for a visa.
Somalia, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, however, continue to hold the bottom four positions on the index, thus earning the title as the least powerful passports to own.
Given the numerous travel restrictions they're facing, a growing number of people, including investors, ordinary citizens and avid travelers, are looking into the possibility of acquiring a second passport.
To provide the public a snapshot of which states offer the most  mobility, Henley & Partners, a specialist in citizenship and residence planning, collaborated with  the Air Transport Association (IATA) to produce a visa index annually.
The winner for 2016, Germany, has just outranked the UK, last year’s number one on the index. Following closely is the Swedish passport, which offers visa-free access to 176 destinations.
The third-most powerful passports are those possessed by citizens of Finland, France, Italy, Spain and the UK, which all entitle holders entry into 175 destinations.
Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands and the United States land in the fourth place.

Hi Senate wants Lamorde to appear before its plenary over corruption allegations

Says it has the power to examine all persons whose evidence may be relevant to the investigation

The Senate on Thursday, February 25 decided on a resolution to issue an arrest warrant on Ibrahim Lamorde, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
While considering a report of the committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions, a petition from George Uboh was submitted against Mr Lamorde for alleged financial crimes and corruption.

Sam Anyawu, the chairman of the committee who quoted section 88 of the constitution, said that for any matter under investigation under section 88, the Senate or the House of Representatives or a committee appointed in accordance with section 62 of this constitution shall have powers to procure all evidence written or oral, direct or ask as may deem necessary and examine all persons as witnesses whose evidence may be relevant to the investigation.

He also said that the committee should be able to require all evidence to be given on oath and summon any person in Nigeria to give evidence at any place or produce evidence in his possession.

Anyawu added that the committee should be able to issue a warrant to compel the attendance of any person who after having been summoned, fails, refuses or neglects to do so.

He also said that the warrant issued under this section may be served or executed by any member of the Nigerian Police Force or by any person authorized by the President of the Senate or the Speaker of the House of Representatives as the case may be.
However, the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, raised a point of order saying that the matter should not have been brought to the floor of the senate but taken straight to the Senate president to append his signature, adding that all the answers needed were already in the constitution.

In his reaction, Senate president, Bukola Saraki said that the matter did not need to come to plenary because the actions to take have already been spelt out in the constitution.

He also said it should be left at the level of the committee and in accordance with section 89 of the Constitution thereby sustaining the point of order of Ekweremadu.
